Probate

During probate, the court appoints an executor (if there's a will) or an administrator (if there's no will) to manage the estate. The executor or administrator is responsible for inventorying the deceased person's assets, appraising their value, settling outstanding debts and taxes, and ultimately distributing the remaining assets to the beneficiaries. Probate can be a time-consuming and costly process, and it becomes a matter of public record.
